Interesting Things for ESL Students "A fun study site for students of English as a Second Language. Word games, puzzles, quizzes, exercises, slang, proverbs and much more." I thought the slang dictionary was was good--plenty of real slang words, not obscure ones known only by a few people.

Teacher's Pet: "Tools for creative language teachers."

The Linguistic Funland TESL page "At the Funland, you'll find resources for language teaching and learning and linguistics study."

Merriam Webster: Concise, easy to understand definitions of words, and a thesaurus as well. It's free, and good. There is an unabridged version, which you must pay for. There's even a reverse dictionary, where you type in the definition, and the dictionary gives you the word. Great for writers, but it's not free.

Merriam Webster's Word of the Day: Gives a fun word every day, sometimes esoteric, othertimes useful and up-to-date. Oct. 17th, 2003, for example, was Frankenfood • \FRANK-en-food\ • noun : genetically engineered food. Free.

Merriam Webster's Word Puzzles: Game applets. Most are about words, but there is an occasional game involving cultural information. A new game everyday, and past games can still be played. Free.

MTA SZTAKI: A useful Hungarian-English/English Hungarian online dictionary. Usage is free, and you can suggest definitions yourself. MTA SZTAKI is the Hungarian acronym of the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Magyar Tudományos Akadémia, Számítástechnikai és Automatizálási Kutató Intézet)

Wordsmyth: an educational dictionary and thesaurs that allows you to look up exact definitions, misspelled words, or a group of words (broad search). The broad search worked well, as my search, "ball," produces a dozen definitions, from ball, through medicine ball, to masked ball. Looking up misspelled words also is possible, but my search "rit" turned up "writ" and "rite" (as in ritual), but not right or write.

(Wicked) Stuff for English Learners: A grab bag of things that are useful and, if possible, fun for the English learner. An example is the Phrasal Verb Drinks Dispenser, in which you match mixed up verbs and prepositions with each other and their meanings. Free.
